The classic hot buttered rum batter consists of two cups of light brown sugar, one stick unsalted butter, one teaspoon of cinnamon, one-quarter teaspoon of cloves and one-half teaspoon of nutmeg. Simply blend all the ingredients together well and keep the batter in your freezer until you are ready to use it.
There are several different recipes for the hot buttered rum drink where dark rum that is barrel-aged and dark brown sugar are used to deepen the flavor. Some prefer to add extra spices such as vanilla or mace to enhance the aroma as well.
When you are ready to make a hot buttered rum drink, simply put two tablespoons of the batter in a ceramic mug. Add three ounces of dark or spiced , pour boiling water and stir well to blend all the ingredients. You can garnish your hot buttered rum drink with cinnamon sticks, nutmeg or whipped cream. For best enjoyment, a hot buttered rum drink should be served immediately: as the drink begins to cool the ingredients will separate.
